Workshops F F-01 Effective Strategies to Communicate with Individuals with Serious Mental Illness (Part 2 of 2) - This workshop will present strategies to communicate with tact, respect, kindness, and strength with some of those most beleaguered by mental disorders. Ellis is known for presentations both clinically sound and streetwise, including his graphic role-play of the behaviors of concern. This training will also include information on ways to increase one's intuitive ability to discern the intentions of people who have difficulty communicating in straight-forward ways.
Speaker: Ellis Amdur, MA Level: All LevelsF-02 Motivational interviewing with adolescent sexual abusers II - role play and skill practice - This is a skill based session for intermediate and advanced practitioners that will offer hands on exercises for those interested. Attendees MUST have also attended the first session. These skills can be applied to many other types of clients. Practitioners are encouraged to bring 3-4 copies of 1⁄2 page case information sheets (with ALL identifying information removed) to share with others in role plays. Cases should be succinct and be at a 'stuck' point.

Crime scene measurements, sketches and photographs must be completed. Traditional and non-traditional evidence must be identified collected and preserved. Exigent circumstances require an immediate response to prevent the destruction of evidence. Video case examples will be utilized to demonstrate the importance of the law enforcement response. Participants should have some knowledge of child sexual abuse investigations.

After a summary of this newest scientific research, we'll learn why the most noticeable intergenerational cycles of violence are more than one generation learning "bad behavior" from another-and what we can do about it.

Controversies regarding confounding of clinical and forensic roles; use of projective tests and misconceptions of attachment will be covered. You will participate in the first public discussion of proposed Guidelines for Expert Evaluations in Child Welfare Proceedings developed through the statewide, multidisciplinary Expert and Evaluation Standards Project.
Panel: Robert Wheeler, PhD/ Michael O'Leary, PhD/The Honorable Charles Snyder, JD Level: All LevelsF-06 The Predictive Validity of the JSOAP-II: Improving Risks & Needs Management - In this talk, I will discuss a follow-up study of the 800 youth in our sample and an examination of the predictive utility of this scale, with teenage boys as well as with youngsters that the scale was not originally intended for - pre-adolescents and girls. I will discuss our vision of the proper use of this scale for identifying needs as well as risk in the pursuit of optimal management decisions.

Tips for testifying including pre-trial preparation of the witness and in court demeanor will be discussed. Special emphasis will be on preparing a child abuse prosecution expert witness for court and combating a defense child abuse expert witness.

Sawicki, JD Level: All LevelsF-08 Caring for the Caregiver: Prescriptions for Survival - Professionals in the helping professions are often under great stress, and burnout avoidance is a popular topic. This workshop will discuss the nature of our work and the difference between stress and dis-stress. The need for, and techniques of, self-care are discussed, as is professional rededication in a field where success can be difficult to measure. Concludes with some relaxation and guided imagery.
Speaker: John Stirling, MD Level: All LevelsF-09 Diagnosis and Treatment of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) This workshop will begin by laying out current and accepted standards for diagnosing and treating ADHD, and will then discuss the reality-that these standards are infrequently followed in clinical practice, often leading to suboptimal results. In particular, results of the multimodal treatment study (MTA) comparing medication therapy, to behavior therapy, to their combination, and to standard community care will be presented. The workshop will then discuss progress we are making in developing clinically-useful technology to enhance the accuracy of diagnosis, and to facilitate the rapid selection and titration of optimally-effective pharmacotherapy.
Speaker: Martin Teicher, MD Level: Intermediate/AdvancedF-10 Child Fatalities and Near Fatalities: Improving the First Response (by EMS, Law Enforcement and CPS) What first responders from CPS, law enforcement and EMS do (or don't do) in the critical first hours following a sudden unexplained or unexpected child death or serious physical injury often makes the difference between accurately identifying and differentiating inflicted versus accidental injuries or natural deaths. This workshop will present the WA State C-POD Guidelines for First Responders (Collaboration, Preservation, Observation and Documentation) - the result of a Children's Justice project that also developed first responder training. Ideas for how to implement widespread improvements will be discussed, including the CDC's new SUIDI (Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Investigation) evidence collection form. Speaker: Patti Toth Level: All LevelsF-11 Historical Trauma Leading Up To the Enactment of the Indian Child Welfare Act (Part 3 of 3) - This workshop will expand upon the traumatic historical events leading up to the enactment of the Indian Child Welfare Act. Workshop participants will gain an understanding of the psychological and sociological impacts of government policies on Native American communities across the nation. Our current understanding and the challenges of implementing the law is best understood in the context of a history of colonization. This workshop is for any individual seeking to explore a deeper awareness of government policies impacting Tribes in the United States.
Speaker: Martina Whelshula, PhD Level: All LevelsF-12 Understanding the importance of enhanced visits in strengthening the parent-child relationship and providing better outcomes for children- Positive and meaningful attachments with a birth parent are a child's basic right. Children attach to their parents through emotional bonds. Positive and meaningful attachments provide a secure emotional base for children to maintain and build relationships with their parents, relatives, friends and others. A parent's consistent and purposeful interactions with their child(ren) can be a powerful motivator for a parent's journey in successfully addressing their parenting deficiencies. This workshop will explore the benefits of establishing timely, frequent, consistent and meaningful visitation between parents and children. The workshop will review current research on visitation with a particular emphasis on visitation's impact on case resolution. One community's collaborative response to enhancing the quality and quantity of visitation and family access will be explored.
