Working effectively with the various Latino populations requires an understanding of race, ethnicity, nationalities and bilingualism. Participants will learn about the changing Latino demographics of this country and what information is necessary to understanding the populations in their service area. Using current census information, becoming informed about historical and contemporary use of terms, and bilingual education concepts will be critical to this process. We will also discuss the various barriers that make it difficult to provide effective services and strategies to overcome them.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the changing demographics of the various Latino groups in the United States
2. Understand the difference in cultural competency, cultural sensitivity and cultural humility .
3. Understand barriers to providing services, which include legal, educational, linguistic and religious issues.
