This session will address the emerging Female Genital Mutilation epidemic in the United States. With the rise in immigration of women and girls from countries that practice FGM, the U.S. has approximately 500,000 at-risk girls and women who are at risk of FGM.  The session will discuss: identifying girls at risk; reporting obligations under child abuse and other statutes; the government’s response to FGM; understanding of the custom and practices of FGM; the physical and psychological consequences of FGM; culturally sensitive practices for speaking to families; resources for child abuse professionals; and laws to keep children and women safe.
