D-13 - Understanding Historical Trauma and Intergenerational Trauma: We Have to Know It to Heal It   Intermediate

Child Welfare   Diversity   Child Abuse (Physical/Sexual)

Rates of adult and teen suicide, drug and alcohol addiction, and domestic violence remain high among American Indian communities.   Indian children and families’ Involvement with child welfare agencies as well as removal and placement of Indian children remains disproportionate.  Professionals working with Indian families will increase knowledge and understanding of historical factors and traumas which continue to impact Indian families and communities.  It is our hope that better understanding by professionals will lead to better outcomes for Indian families involved with the child welfare systems.
