F-03 - Addressing the Impact of Opioids: Implications for Child Welfare Policy and Practice   Advanced

  Substance Abuse

Families at the intersection of child welfare and substance use treatment systems are often in crisis mode and demand urgent, immediate and supportive intervention. The workshop will explore the wave of opioid (e.g. heroin and prescription pain medications) misuse and dependence and its impact on families and child welfare practice.  Learn about strategies recently employed by six states in a 2-year initiative to address infants with substance exposure.  Learn standards of care for the treatment of opioid use disorders for pregnant and parenting women. Concrete strategies that can be readily incorporated into child welfare practice to identify and address parental substance use and to improve outcomes for families will be discussed.
